What to Expect at Your First Concealed Carry Class

Ahadi Ture July 1, 2026

Nervous about your first firearms class? Here's exactly what happens — from classroom instruction to live-fire qualification — so you arrive prepared and confident.

Walking into your first concealed carry class can feel intimidating — especially if you've never handled a firearm before. But understanding what to expect can ease your nerves and help you get the most out of your training.

Before You Arrive

For most beginner-friendly classes, you don't need to bring your own firearm. At Armed & Trained, we provide everything you need for the range: a handgun, ammunition, targets, and eye and ear protection.

What you should bring:

  • A valid government-issued photo ID
  • Water and snacks
  • Lunch (for all-day classes)
  • A pen and notebook
  • Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing

Classroom Instruction

Most of your class time is spent in the classroom, where your instructor covers:

  • Developing a personal and home protection plan
  • Firearm safety and nomenclature
  • Shooting fundamentals — grip, stance, sight alignment, trigger control
  • Gear and holster selection
  • The legal use of force and self-defense law
  • What happens during and after a violent encounter

This isn't dry lecture material — it's practical, scenario-based training designed to give you the knowledge and confidence to be a responsible carrier.

Live-Fire Qualification

On range day, you'll put your classroom knowledge into practice. Your instructor will guide you through safe handling, loading, firing, and unloading procedures before you begin the qualification course.

Don't worry about being perfect. The goal is to demonstrate safe, competent handling — not Olympic-level marksmanship.

After the Class

Upon successful completion, you'll receive a training certificate that qualifies you to apply for your permits. Your instructor will walk you through the application process for each state, including where to submit, what fees to expect, and what documents you need.

You Belong Here

Whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced shooter, our classes are designed to meet you where you are. No judgment, no intimidation — just patient, professional instruction from certified educators who want you to succeed.

Find a class date that works for you and take the first step.
